We have several individuals who have volunteered to mentor our marketing students. Feel free to post questions here and a mentor will provide an answer. (Note that this is starting Spring semester, 2013)
My name is Zachary Zaroor and I am a senior here at UMKC. Honestly, I find marketing to be one of my greatest passions and feel like there are infinite career possibilities. However, getting into these careers is where I have no clue on what to do. Can you please tell me where I can go or who I can talk to about a career that empahsizes in sports marketing? It is what I want to do with my profession and I could use anay advice or answers I could receive.
As another question, I want to run something by you. I am aware that customer service varies among companies and firms, and also that quality customer service can be a great marketing tool on its own. However, do you feel that quality customer service or creative ad campaigns contribute more to the success of larger companies and firms?
Great questions and thanks for starting the discussion. On starting your career, there are tons of potential ways to get into a marketing career. First, have you researched and applied for any internships? These work experiences can provide you a lot of insight into the company and the role of a marketer.
On your second question on the value of customer service vs. creative ad campaigns, the answer on which contributes more success really depends on the business objective. Both of these efforts build the brand, with strong customer service building brand loyalty and engagement; ad campaigns build brand awareness. The value of the contribution is dependent on what the company wants to accomplish and how the effort is developed. Great customer service approaches, e.g., Zappos and great ad campaigns, e.g., Apple create a lot of positive goodwill and impressions that in turn builds brand loyalty.

Thank you for your answers. And yes, I have applied for internships, and received offers, however none of them were exactly what I was looking for. I will just keep the legs moving and keep on going until I receive the job I want.
Good evening. My name is Kory McEnaney, and I am an upcoming senior at UMKC. I am majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in management; however, I plan on attending grad. school with an emphasis in Marketing. I, too, am very interested in pursuing a career in marketing, with a long-term goal of becoming a Marketing Manager, or perhaps even a CMO. Do you have any suggestions for what type of industries to involve myself in (i.e. advertising agencies, health industries, etc) that may provide greater opportunities for advancement when it comes to marketing?
Also, as a general question, what suggestions do you have as far as accepting a job opportunity out of college even if it may not be the exact field you are wanting to pursue in the long-term?
